Excursion Van Rossum: The Valley Amsterdam
|Presented by||Action committee|
|Date||Wednesday, March 11, 2020|
Our partner Van Rossum has invited U-BASE to visit one of the most impressive projects in the Netherlands: The Valley. Valley is a large multi-purpose complex currently under construction, and even though just its dimensions and architecture are enough to capture the eye, there is much more that lays within the design. The architectural design of this structure used a large number of parametric and building physics tools, to make the building more sustainable, and in order to make the structural design out of the final architectural design, many clever concepts were used.
Public transport costs will be covered (€17/person) by our partner Van Rossum. We'll leave from Delft station at 10:20. In Amstedam we'll be using public transport as well. Safety equipment will be taken care of, but feel free to bring your own safety shoes. We expect to be back in Delft between 18:30-19:00.
The programme (time is an indication)
10:20 - departure from Delft station by train
12:00 - arrival at Van Rossum headquarters in Amsterdam; office tour, presentation and lunch
13:30 - public transport to the construction site of The Valley
14:30 - arrival at the construction site; presentation by Boele & van Eesteren (the contractor), safety briefing and site tour
16:30 - drinks and final presentation by EDGE Technologies (Cas Bonnema)
17:00 - transport back to Delft

Involved project partners
Van Rossum is much more than just a structural engineering agency. We act as advisers to our clients and as part of a design team, Van Rossum understands that it’s about more than translating a Design Brief into a plan.
We are interested in realising ambitions and aligning these within the available budget. That is why our work consists of directing; being the link between client, users, architects, project management and other advisers. And because we at Van Rossum have been doing this for a very long time, we are experts at organising integral solutions. In order to reach optimal results, we as structural engineers need knowledge of all aspects of construction. Only then can we construct a precise plan and produce a creative design. At Van Rossum, we call it ‘economic construction’: establishing a clear economic constructive concept from the first stages, guaranteeing the feasibility of project.
In addition to this technical component, we at Van Rossum aim for good communication which is essential in realising a project. This involves not only design team members, but also other parties involved, such as users, supervising authorities and municipalities. First and foremost of course, we’re blinkered specialists – boffins. But over the past decades, we have also learned that it is imperative to act as a catalyst in a project; to be proactive and daring. And that involves much more than proposing solutions in our own field. At Van Rossum, we know that we cannot lean back and wait. That takes a certain type of people, which is why we give our employees extra training ourselves, because a diploma alone does not make a good structural engineer. It takes practical experience, from the perspective that structural engineers are meant to realise big plans and great ambitions. We appreciate that leading position and see that it can lead to great projects that satisfy our clients.
